Azores: Europe at your doorstep

An autonomous region from Portugal, the first settlers came to the Azores from the mainland in the 15th Century and with them came along the prosperous buoyancy of that country’s Maritime Empire, later succeeded by the Spanish, the Dutch and the British.

Hundreds of years later the sister isles, which are rich in native fauna and flora, seem almost forgotten by the rest of the world, too worried about immediacy and globalization. It’s the ideal place for the traveler who desperately needs to get lost but has a difficult time finding a place to hide.

Located slightly under five hours flying time from the United States Eastern Coast, there are direct connections from both, Boston and New York City with local airline SATA; the Azores, 930 miles from Portugal’s capital city, Lisbon, are the closest link between the two continent’s and a perfect destination in their own right.
