Safe flying is for the birds

PASSENGER jets are at a dramatically increased risk from mid-air collisions with flocks of birds, according to new figures.

Statistics from the UK’s air safety watchdog reveal an alarming 23 per cent rise in the number of incidents.

Last year saw 1,823 bird strikes reported to the Civil Aviation Authority in Britain, 119 so serious that they were the subject of full investigations.

Climate change and its effect on bird migration patterns could be one of the key factors putting flights in more jeopardy.
